lunch bag

In Switzerland our kids always came home for lunch and here they will eat at school. So we tried to figure out, what to give them and how to pack it up.

I still had some canvas left from sewing a pencil case for Calum. So we decided to use it for their lunch bags.

Jocelyn has sewn her own. She worked very exacts and the result is great.

In der Schweiz sind die Kinder mittags immer nach Hause gekommen und hier essen sie in der Schule. So haben wir uns überlegt, was sich als Lunch eignet und wie wir diesen am besten verpacken.

Ich hatte noch ein Stück Plane von meinem letzten Nähprojekt (Etui für Calum) übrig. So haben wir entschieden, dieses für die Lunchbags zu nutzen.

Jocelyn hat ihren selber genäht. Sie hat ganz exact gearbeitet. Das Resultat ist sehr hübsch.

first day of school – erster Schultag

Today school started for our oldest two. Everybody was nervous and I guess I was by far the worst. When I picked them up, they both came out with a smile on their faces. I’m very grateful for this first smile…

At my first day of school I was given a “Schultüte” (school cone) from my Godfather (that’s a tradition in Germany) and I wanted Calum to have one as well. Jocelyn asked if she could get one, too, since it was her first day in school here in Colorado. So I made two.

I used cardboard from our cereal boxes and painted them on the outside. We put some chocolate in it and an angel with the word brave on it. Brave, because they have handled this move so bravely by just being open for new things and not giving up so easily.

Heute war der erste Schultag von unseren Ältesten zwei. Alle waren nervös, aber ich war mit Abstand die Schlimmste. Als ich dann am Mittag vor der Schule gewartet habe, sind sie mir mit einem Lächeln auf dem Gesicht entgegengekommen. Für dieses erste Lächeln bin ich sehr dankbar…

An meinem ersten Schultag habe ich eine Schultüte von meinem Patenonkel bekommen und ich plante eine für Calum zu machen. Jocelyn wünschte sich auch nochmals eine, weil es hier in Colorado ihr erster Schultag ist. Also habe ich zwei gemacht.

Ich habe den Karton von unseren Frühstücksflockenschachteln benutzt und sie aussen angemalt. Gefüllt haben wir sie mit Schokolade und einem Engel mit dem aufgestickten Wort “brave” (mutig). Mutig, weil sie diesen Umzug so tapfer angehen, indem sie für Neues offen sind und nicht schnell aufgeben, auch wenn es nicht immer einfach ist.

when a donut isn’t a donut anymore…

we have a certain idea of what things are supposed to be like.

Our son loves donuts, but not all donuts, only the ones made in Switzerland. He doesn’t like the donuts here in Colorado. They are a little different to the way he thinks they should be. But that difference makes me eat the ones here. I didn’t really care much for the ones back home, but the the donuts here are perfect, especially the ones with the sugar-cinnamon-coating. I have to be careful not to eat to many.

With moving here there are a lot of things that are a little different. Sometimes it taste a little better and sometimes it doesn’t and we have to get used to it.

At the library there is a big variety of magazines. With the hopes that I can actually bake these successfully at home as well, I borrowed this one:

Jedem Begriff teilen wir einen Inhalt zu.

Unser Sohn liebt Donuts, aber nicht alle, sondern nur die, welche in der Schweiz hergestellt werden. Die Donuts hier in Colorado mag er nicht. Die weichen ein wenig von seiner Vorstellung eines Donuts ab. Genau diese Abweichung lässt es zu, dass ich Donuts hier esse. Von den Schweizer Donuts war ich kein grosser Fan. Aber hier muss ich schauen, dass sie nicht zur Gefahr werden. Mein Favorit ist der im Zimtzuckermantel.

Mit dem Wechsel hierher gibt es ganz viele Dinge, die ein bisschen anders sind. Manchmal schmeckt uns das auf Anhieb besser und manchmal müssen wir uns erst daran gewöhnen.

In der Bibliothek gibt es eine grosse Auswahl an Magazinen. In der Hoffnung, dass ich diese Donuts erfolgreich nach backen kann, habe ich dieses Magazin hier ausgeliehen:

smaller budget – kleines Budget

We do have a smaller budget to work with and that’s why we got most of our furniture at the flea markets here. We only had a few things like the big green egg we wanted to invest in. It is a lot cheaper here than in Switzerland, but is still a big investment for what we have.

Our fleamarket treasures have a history already and a lot of charme. And it is always surprising what a little soapwater can do to bring it’s beauty out again.

Ten years ago it was possible to get an old Coca Cola box for very little money, but now their sold at 40 to 60 dollars a piece. I was looking for a wooden box for Calum so he could put his Playmobil in it. Last week I found this box for a reasonable price.

Wir müssen mit einem kleineren Budget auskommen und haben so unsere Möbel hauptsächlich in den Brockenstuben hier gekauft. Wir hatten wenige Artikel, die wir uns leisten wollten wie zum Beispiel das Big Green Egg. Dies ist hier viel günstiger als in der Schweiz, aber im Verhältnis doch eine grössere Investition.

Unsere Brockenstubenerrungenschaften haben schon eine Geschichte und bringen Charme mit sich. Und es ist immer wieder überraschend, wie man diesen Wert mit etwas Seifenwasser und einem Lappen wieder zum Vorschein bringen kann.

Vor 10 oder mehr Jahren konnte man hier alte Coca Cola Boxen oder andere Holzschachteln für ganz wenig Geld kaufen. Im Moment muss man mit einem Preis von 40 – 60 Dollar rechnen. Ich habe nach einer Holzschachtel gesucht, damit Calum seine Playmobilsachen darin verstauen kann. Letzte Woche habe ich folgende zu einem guten Preis gefunden:

Toys with that certain something – Spielsachen mit dem gewissen etwas

A visit to Stuttgart is always on our list when we travel to Germany to see my family.

So we visited our favourite places there again:

Our friend bought the kids a really cool toy from the magazin. It was the perfect traveling companion for them. It is very important to me that our toys have that certain something, are educationally valuable, motivate to be active and to think and are fun…

So haben wir auch dieses Mal unsere Lieblingsorte dort besucht:

Aus dem Magazin haben die Kinder ein tolles Spielzeug bekommen, welches sich als Reisebegleiter eignet. Ich lege viel Wert darauf, dass unsere Spielsachen das gewisse etwas haben, pädagogisch sinnvoll sind, zur Aktivität und zum Denken anregen und Spass machen…

When we were at the airport in Zürich waiting to board the plane, there was the following commercial on the wall right next to the toilets:

Which 4 words do I connect with Switzerland? Depending on the situation they will be different. Today with Switzerland’s birthday we chose the following:

“Our” country in 4 words:

Calum (our son):

Grossmami and Grosspapi, family, friends and Swiss doughnuts (I will explain this in a following post)

Jocelyn (our oldest daughter):

friends, Spätzli made by Grossmami, Swiss chocolate and family

Rae (our youngest daughter): can’t put her thoughts into words yet, that we would understand:

We thinks she connects people that she loves with Switzerland

Anthony (my husband):

mountains, home, close friends and punctuality

Tamara (me):

familiarity, small but precious, design and dry-cured ham

…there is a story to each word we chose…more to that maybe later

 

Als wir bei unserer Abreise auf dem Flughafen in Zürich aufs Borden warten mussten, hing an der Wand bei den Toiletten folgendes Plakat:

homemade – selbst gebacken

Yesterday we baked our first whole wheat bread in our Big Green Egg (grill). It had a nice crust and a grilled taste to it. And today it passed the most difficult test, when our son said, that he liked it. I will look for another recipe, because the consistency of the dough before baking was different to what I’m used to, that could also have to do with the altitude.

Next we want to bake a Pizza in our Big Green Egg…

Gestern haben wir unser erstes Ruchbrot im Big Green Egg (Grill) gebacken. Es hat eine schöne Kruste bekommen und riecht ganz leicht nach „grilliert“. Und heute hat es den schwierigsten Test bestanden, als unser Sohn auch meinte, dass er es gerne hat. Ich werde noch nach einem anderen Rezept schauen, die Konsistenz des Teiges vor dem Backen war anders als ich das gewohnt bin, das könnte aber auch am Höhenunterschied liegen.

Als nächstes möchten wir eine Pizza in unserem Big Green Egg backen…

Out of our comfortzone – ausserhalb unserer Wohlfühlzone

Whatever you know or is familiar, is now far away, everything is new…

At the beginning of this month we moved into or small and cute house in Colorado. Other than in Switzerland the houses don’t get cleaned by the people moving out. Our Jemako cloths were still on their way at that time. So we didn’t have any other choice but to go and buy cleaning supplies. We found ourselves standing in front of a huge shelf with an endless amount of cleaning powders, that all promissed to be the best ones for the job. Which one would keep it’s promise, which one is eco-friendly? All of that in the company of our three kids, who wanted nothing more but to leave the store.

Something that used to be so easy, buying cleaning supplies, turned into something overwhelming. It was also striking that there are almost no washable cleaning cloths. One-way is in…

We only bought two cleaning powders that day and asked our friends for advice. They let us borrow some of theirs so we could try them out. That was very helpful and by now the cleaning supplies are a lot more familiar…

The familiar gains in meaning when you are far away from home: We drove to Denver to go to Ikea. I’ve never felt such joy before seeing the Ikea sign like on that day in Denver. A little glimse of home.

 

Das Vertraute fehlt, alles ist neu…

Anfangs Monat haben wir unser kleines, hübsches Häuschen in Colorado übernommen. Anders als in der Schweiz, wird hier für eine Übergabe nicht geputzt. Unsere Pakete mit den Jemakolappen waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht da. So blieb uns nichts anderes übrig als neue Putzutensilien kaufen zu gehen. Nun standen wir vor einem riesigen Regal mit unendlich vielen Putzmitteln, welche alle versprachen, sich besonders zu eignen und das Beste zu sein. Welches wird halten was es verspricht, welches ist umweltfreundlich? Dies alles in Begleitung unserer drei Kinder, die sich nichts mehr wünschten als endlich aus dem Laden raus zu kommen.

Etwas das sonst so einfach war, Putzmittel kaufen, war nun in der Situation, in der wir steckten, eine Überforderung. Auffallend war auch, dass es kaum waschbare Putzlappen zur Auswahl hatte. Einweg ist in…

Wir haben dann nur zwei Putzmittel genommen und unsere Freunde um Rat gefragt. Sie haben uns welche ausgeliehen, damit wir sie testen konnten. Das war sehr hilfreich und in der Zwischenzeit sind uns die Putzmittel hier schon vertrauter…

Vertrautes gewinnt in der Ferne noch mehr an Bedeutung: Wir sind nach Denver gefahren, um bei Ikea einige Dinge einzukaufen. Noch nie habe ich solche Glücksgefühle bezüglich Ikea verspürt, wie in dem Moment als ich von der Autobahn aus, deren Werbetafel gesehen habe. Ein kleines Stückchen Heimat.
