This week is teacher appreciation week. Today all the kids brought a flower to school. I had planned to make flowers from tissue paper. I had an idea on how to do it, but it didn’t end up working out. In need of solving our problem we thought of these flowers that we found in one of the Geomini magazines a while back.

Diese Woche wird das ganze Personal in der Schule für ihre Arbeit gewürdigt. Für jeden Tag wurde eine besondere Geste geplant. Heute haben die Kinder ihren Lehrpersonen eine Blume gebracht. Eigentlich wollte ich aus Seidenpapier welche basteln und hatte auch schon eine Vorstellung davon wie das gehen sollte. Das hat dann aber nicht geklappt. Wir mussten eine andere Lösung finden. Die folgenden Blumen sind uns wieder in den Sinn gekommen. Wir haben sie vor einer Weile in einer Ausgabe vom Geomini gefunden.

You color one side of the flower with waterproof crayons. There can also be a message added in the center of the flower. After the petals are folded inward it can be put in water and it will open on it’s own.

Mit wasserfesten Wachsfarben wird eine Seite der Papierblume angemalt. In die Mitte kann eine Nachricht geschrieben werden. Nachdem die Blütenblätter nach innen gefaltet wurden, kann die Blume ins Wasser gelegt werden. Sie wird sich von alleine öffnen.

It’s been raining the last few days…We can’t complain we are very spoiled with sunny days (about 300 a year).

In den letzten Tagen hat es hier geregnet…Wir können und aber nicht beschweren, denn wir sind mit Sonnentagen sehr verwöhnt (ca. 300 im Jahr).

Sorry, I’m lacking structure in my blogging – kind of represents my daily life at the moment, working on different projects at once…

Tut mir leid, im Moment fehlt die Regelmässigkeit meiner Blogbeiträge – widerspiegelt meinen Alltag, da erhoffe ich mir auch mehr Struktur, verfolge mehrere Projekte gleichzeitig…

Our bake sale was a success, we were practically sold out in the end. We offered Swiss bread loafs and little breads, Zopf, Cantucci, Streusselkuchen with peaches and Mueslibars. Since we only have a normal size oven and wanted the baked goods to be as fresh as possible, we started baking the Cantucci and the cakes on Friday, for the breads I stayed up all night and put one in after the other. In the end we baked clear into our bake sale time. But made some people happy with bread that was still really worm and oven fresh…

Unser “bake sale” war ein Erfolg, zum Schluss war praktisch alles ausverkauft. Wir haben Schweizer Brot, Brötchen, Zopf, Cantucci, Streusselkuchen mit Pfirsichen und Stundentenschnitten offeriert. Da wir nur einen Backofen normaler Grösse haben, kann nur ein Brot auf einmal gebacken werden. Weil wir aber wollten, dass alles so frisch wie möglich ist, haben wir am Freitag mit dem Backen der Cantucci und Studentenschnitten begonnen, für das Backen der Brote, bin ich die ganze Nacht aufgeblieben und habe eines nach dem anderen in den Ofen geschoben. Schlussendlich haben wir noch gebacken, als der “bake sale” bereits begonnen hatte. Und haben so einige mit Broten glücklich gemacht, welche immer noch sehr warm und ofenfrisch waren…

We are having our first bake sale this coming Saturday and are very excited, but also a little nervous…

Wir organisieren unseren ersten “bake sale” am kommenden Samstag und freuen uns, sind aber auch ein wenig nervös…

We wanted to keep our invitations simple, tried to keep the production cost low and we wanted it to be easy to make more than just a few. So we printed them with our own stamps. We made them out of cereal boxes and foam rubber. My goal in the near future is, to make some out of a carving block with linoleum cutters. I think the carving blocks are a lot softer than the linoleum itself. In the past I have carved some out of normal erasers, which also worked well, but it limits you in the size of the stamp.

Wir wollten, dass unsere Einladungen einfach sind, wollten die Produktionskosten niedrig halten und wollten auch, dass es unkompliziert ist, wenn auch mehrere davon produzieren werden sollen. So haben wir sie mit unseren eigenen Stempeln bedruckt. Diese haben wir aus Müslischachteln und Moosgummi hergestellt. Mein Ziel ist es, in der nahen Zukunft einen eigenen Stempel aus einem “carving block” mit Linoleumschnitzwerkzeug herzustellen. Ich glaube, dass der “carving block” weicher ist als Linoleum und es dann auch einfacher geht. Ich habe auch schon aus normalen Radiergummi geschnitzt, das ging auch sehr gut, aber da ist man von der Grösse her ein bisschen eingeschränkt.

We found this book a the library and I think it was made with prints also. It is nicely designed and also the content is fun.

Wir habe dieses Buch in der Bibliothek gefunden und ich nehme an, dass auch mit Druck gearbeitet wurde. Ich mag die Umsetzung und finde es vom Inhalt her sehr ansprechend.

a hundred foot journey

A friend o ours told us about the movie “a hundred foot journey” and asked me if I could sew a hairband like that for her. To try it out I made a prototype for Jocelyn:

Meanwhile we have seen the movie, actually more than once, and think it’s great. It’s about chasing a dream and what can come out of it, if you do not give up – entertaining and heartwarming.

Seither haben wir den Film gesehen, sogar mehrmals, und finden ihn sehr gut. Es geht darum, Träume zu verfolgen und was daraus entstehen kann, wenn man an ihnen festhält – unterhaltsam und herzerwärmend. Sehr empfehlenswert.

Inspired by the doll my mom sewed for Rae…

Rae would clean her doll’s bottom with real wipes until the fabric was all damp. She was also missing diapers that she could put on her after the cleaning process. This is what we came up with:

Rae hat den Popo ihrer Puppe mit richtigen Feuchttüchern geputzt, bis der Stoff ganz nass war. Auch fehlten ihr Windeln, welche sie ihr danach hätte anziehen können. So haben wir folgendes entworfen:

Quark

We made our own Quark and I’m very happy with the results. Quark is an ingredient in a few of our favorite recipes and I wasn’t able to find it here.

Wir haben unseren eigenen Quark gemacht und ich bin mit dem Resultat sehr zufrieden. Quark ist eine Zutat in einiger unserer Lieblingsrezepte und wir können hier keinen kaufen.

We followed this recipe. So you only need 1 liter of whole milk and 250ml of buttermilk. I did replace half of the whole milk with whipping cream.

Wir sind diesem Rezept gefolgt. Man benötigt nur einen Liter Vollmilch und 250ml Buttermilch. Ich habe eine Hälfte der Vollmilch mit Vollrahm ersetzt.

Mix 5dl whole milk with 5dl whipping cream.

5dl Vollrahm und 5dl Vollmilch mischen.

Add the buttermilk – cover it and let it stand for two days and by room temperature.

Die Buttermilch zugeben – zugedeckt für zwei Tage und bei Raumtemperatur stehen lassen.

Heat the oven to 86° F turn it off once it reached the right temperature and put the mixture in for about a half an hour.

Den Ofen auf 30° Grad wärmen und abstellen, sobald er die richtige Temperatur erreicht hat und die Mischung für eine halbe Stunde in den Ofen stellen.

Line a sieve with a cloth and pour the mixture in it and tie the cloth. Let it stand for two hours. Put the Quark from the cloth into a glass and then in the fridge.

Ein Sieb mit einem Tuch auslegen und die Mischung ins Tuch giessen und dieses dann verknoten. Für zwei Stunden stehen lassen, dann den gewonnen Quark kühl stellen.

And that’s what we baked: Weihnachtsstollen, one of our favorite recipes with Quark.

Und das haben wir gebacken: Weihnachtsstollen, eines unserer Lieblingsrezepte mit Quark.

basket tutorial – Korb Anleitung

This one will be for the girls room.

Dieser ist für das Mädchenzimmer.

To start with you need to decide what size you want it to be.

Zu Beginn muss entschieden werden, welche Grösse der Korb haben soll.

Mine has a height of 40 cm and a perimeter of 110 cm. The bottom is 18 cm deep.

Meiner hat eine Höhe von 40 cm und einen Umfang von 110 cm. Der Boden ist 18 cm tief.

To calculate the size of the felt you have to take the depth of the bottom and half it and then you add this number to the height of your basket. To that you add one extra cm. Now you double this number. This is now one side of your felt pattern. If you add 2 cm to the perimeter number, you will have the other side of your felt pattern.

Um die Grösse des Filzes zu berechnen, muss man die Hälfte der Bodentiefe zur Höhe dazuzählen und einen extra cm dazugeben. Dies muss dann noch verdoppelt werden, das ist nun eine Seite des Filzes. Um die andere Seite zu berechnen, zählt man 2 cm zum Umfang dazu.

So, mine has a size of 100 cm by 112 cm.

Also mein Filz hat eine Grösse von 100 cm auf 112 cm.

I wanted the bottom of the basket to be covered with another material. If you would like that as well, the width of the fabric is the same as the one from your felt piece. The height is again the half of the depth of the bottom of the basket and then you can decide how much of the side of your basket shall be covered by it. Add this number to the half of the bottom number and add an extra 2 cm.

Ich wollte den unteren Teil des Korbes mit Stoff überziehen. Dafür benötigt man ein Stück Stoff mit einer Breite des Umfangs (mit den 2 extra cm) und die Höhe ist nochmals die Hälfte der Bodentiefe zusammengezählt mit der gewünschten Höhe an der Seite des Korbes. Dazu werden nochmals 2 cm dazugezählt.

To attach the fabric to the felt, I ironed one cm back (lenghtwise).

Um den Stoff sauber auf den Filz nähen zu können, habe ich 1 cm nach hinten gebügelt (der Länge des Stoffes entlang).

Then I sewed it onto the felt with a zick zack.

Dann habe ich den Stoff mit einem Zick Zack auf den Filz genäht.

I also sewed on some ribbons.

Ich habe auch Bänder aufgenäht.

Then I folded the felt (right side in), so that the fabric sewn onto the felt closes to a circle.

Dann habe ich den Filz mit der rechten Seite nach innen gefaltet, so dass sich der aufgenähte Stoff zu einem Kreis schliesst.

Now you sew around it with leaving an opening on the short felt side without the extra fabric sewn on.

Jetzt näht man rundherum, wobei man eine Öffnung auf der kurzen Filzseite ohne extra Stoff offen lässt.

Then all for corners have to be folded like shown on the picture above. I measured 9 cm in and cut that piece of and sewed the basket shut at the 10cm line. Make sure that the fabric inside is nicely placed on the felt, before you sew this part, other wise it can wrinkle up.

Dann werden alle vier Ecken so gefaltet wie oben auf dem Bild. Ich habe 9 cm nach innen gemessen und die Ecken dann abgeschnitten und den Korb an der 10cm Linie zugenäht. Wichtig ist, dass der Stoff schön auf dem Filz liegt, sonst können Falten entstehen.

The project can now be turned inside out. The part with only felt can now be pushed into the other part and you are done.

Das Projekt kann jetzt von innen nach aussen gedreht werden. Der Teil mit nur Filz kann nun in den anderen Teil gestossen werden und der Korb ist fertig.

I was thinking about attaching that flower as well, but I’m not fully happy with it yet…

Ich überlege mir noch, ob ich die Blume annähen soll, sie überzeugt mich noch nicht ganz…

It was a bit tricky writing this up, I hope it makes sense. I wanted you to be able to choose your own basket size.

Es war ein bisschen komplex, die Anleitung zu schreiben und ich hoffe, sie macht Sinn. Ich wollte möglich machen, dass man die Grösse der Korbes selbst wählen kann.

fancy for the musical – hübsch fürs Musical

Our oldest daughter went to see Seussical, the musical with her school today and they were asked to dress fancy. She had one dress that would have worked for the summertime, but for cooler weather she didn’t have anything that fit her anymore. So we decided to sew our own dress. First we tried to put our ideas on paper:

Unsere älteste Tochter ist heute mir ihrer Klasse für das Seussical, the musical ins Theater gegangen und sie durften sich dafür hübsch anziehen. Sie hatte ein Kleid, das für den Sommer ideal gewesen wäre, aber für kühleres Wetter hatte sie nichts mehr, das ihr passte. So haben wir entschieden, ein eigenes Kleid zu nähen. Anfangs haben wir versucht, unsere Ideen auf Papier zu bekommen:

Ich habe ein Muster gezeichnet und habe mich bezüglich der Grösse an ihrem Sommerkleid orientiert…

Then we went shopping for fabric, she was really good at choosing the fabric and I think she did a great job combining different colors and patterns.

Dann mussten wir Stoff einkaufen gehen. Ohne Problem hat sie sich die Stoffe ausgesucht und ich finde, es ist ihr gut gelungen, die Farben und Muster zu kombinieren.

While sewing it we changed a few things. I struggled with drawing a nice pattern for the sleeves and then I couldn’t get them on nicely, so we just made it sleeveless. Which worked fine. She’s wearing a long sleeve shirt underneath.

Während der Produktionsphase haben wir einige Dinge geändert. Ich hatte Mühe, das Muster für die Ärmel zu zeichnen und auch beim Einnähen stimmte etwas nicht, so haben wir entschieden, ein ärmelloses Kleid zu nähen. Das hat dann gut geklappt. Sie hat einfach ein langärmeliges T-shirt darunter getragen.
